Hi Simon,
I went in June 2006 and LOVED it - it's really gorgeous. A friend organized the sleeping arrangements, so I don't know details, but we rented several rooms in a large house up one of the hills in Hvar Town, which for our group of 10 people was the best option as we could cook and have our own space. They were just re-opening (I think) the nice hotel right by the water, which certainly did look very nice.
Nightlife is all around the water, everywhere is pretty similar with a relaxed bar scene and lots of outside seating to relax and people watch. I didn't go to any dance clubs or discos.
The best daytime activity is to go to the beaches on other islands. One day we took a boat out to Palmijana (that is NOT how you spell it, but there are lots of boats at the dock offering to take you to some island that starts with P!), where there are really nice beaches, restaurants, etc. Another day we rented a boat and went by ourselves to the tiny islands nearby. That's pretty much all we did! Some friends went up to the fort that overlooks Hvar Town one morning and said that was fun as well. Of course we also wandered around Hvar Town - we didn't go anywhere else on the island except to take the ferry since we'd heard the other towns weren't that interesting. Have a great trip!
