Hi Elisabet,
A great hotel in SF is the Sir Francis Drake - very elegant but not too too expensive (rooms under $200/night, I don't know what your budget is), and it's right on Union Square. You can sometimes get a better rate on hotels.com than you can on the hotel's website.
If you need an idea of things to do, just post another need with what kind of things you enjoy - I'll give you some suggestions even if your son is being rude
Pier 39 is great, you can see the sea lions!, the farmer's market in the Ferry Building on the weekend is fun, and there are lots of restaurants there where you can enjoy a nice view of the water. If you want shopping there are lots of great places too. Have fun! -
