Environmentally friendly dog clean-up?

This may sound slightly crazy, but it's something I really do need! We live in an apartment, so our dog gets taken to the park at least 3 times a day to run around and yes, poop. As good dog owners, we pick up after her, but throwing away 3 plastic bags each day is driving my environmentalist self crazy!

Anyone know of an environmentally friendly way to clean up after your dog? My immediate thought is that they might sell biodegradable bags, but any idea would help. Thanks!

Well, I don't know if this helps but I happen to remember that JUMBO supermarket has biodegradable bags. They don't take like 400 years to complete the process, they take around 6 months. So if you're throwing them away anyway, at least you know that in six months or so, your enviromentally friendly self will find peace.

Good Luck with that, bye Em.

Aye, I forgot, if you think those bags are a good idea, why not go do your next supermarket shopping at JUMBO and take a few bags with you. Ok now i'm going, bye Em.

I work for an eco-friendly tv web series. We did an episode on "green" cups and plates and bags. Most of those products are what they call compostable. Meaning if you compost them they can breakdown in about 6 months, the issue is when they are thrown away. If there are just dumped into the trash, they don't get the enzymes and bacteria needed to compost. While they don't carry toxins, they don't breakdown quickly like you would think.

So Emily, yes they do make eco friendly "plastic" bags, they are made from corn, but they should be composted if used properly.

    Hello sis,

There are certainly biodegradable poo bags available here. Also available are composting bins which you sink into the soil - slight problem there though given that you are in an apartment. Buy a house!!

just use paper bag, or better, re-use paper bags, from supermarket, coffee shop, lunch-to-go, etc. Also, the newspaper idea is good. You can use a cardboard box and a kind of thongs, to pick up your dog's poo, place it inside, and later dump it like regular trash, and of course, reuse the box - you can put newspaper inside, and change it, so it won't smell.
